Safer feeds based on Safergrass
I am very pleased to announce that LMF Feeds, Kathryn Watts (Rocky Mountain
Research & Consulting, Inc.), and Dr. Stephen Duren (Performance
Horse Nutrition) have formulated two new low non-structural carbohydrate
(NSC) horse feeds. These feeds are called LMF Low-Carb "Stage 1"
and LMF Low-Carb "Complete".
Some of us have found out the hard way that locally available hay is
often too high in carbohydrates for some of our easy-keeper breeds,
idle horses, and those with Cushing’s and/or insulin resistance
where laminitis is a constant worry. We need a safer alternative; something
that has already been tested for NSC, and has all the vitamins and minerals
ordinarily found only in fortified grain products. Instead of waiting
until disaster strikes, many of us would rather get pro-active, and
start treating the cause instead of being forced to deal with the consequences.
The knowledge I am acquiring from my research in the sugar and fructan
content of various species of grass is enabling me to find grass species
for inclusion in these products that have a very low genetic potential
to accumulate either fructan or NSC in general. I personally test each
batch of forage for NSC before I recommend it for inclusion in these
products.
LMF Low-Carb "Stage 1" is designed for horses that may be
sensitive to NSC content of the diet. These are horses that are becoming
overweight, or horses that do not do well on traditional grain based
equine diets. This product will allow people with easy keeper horses
a safer alternative to provide necessary vitamins and minerals without
all the sugar and starch found in grain. Stage 1 feeds at a rate of
0.5 to 1% of ideal body weight daily along with low NSC hay, salt and
fresh clean water.
LMF Low-Carb "Complete" is formulated for horses that have
been diagnosed with carbohydrate related disease. This product will
be very useful to those people who cannot find low carb hay for horses
with insulin resistance and /or laminitis. Low-Carb "Complete"
feeds at a rate of 1.25 to 2% of ideal body weight daily along with
salt and fresh clean water. Laboratory (Dairy One) tests indicate that
these feeds each have a NSC content of 10% or less (As-Fed). We intend
to keep both these products at NSC levels below the average found in
grass hay. For more information, go to www.lmffeeds.com.
In addition, these feeds are both completely fortified with vitamins
and minerals including magnesium, zinc, copper and high levels
of the antioxidants selenium and vitamin E. Ingredients include: native
and non-native forages (each tested), soybean seed coats, and beet pulp.
These feeds are available iin California, Nevada, Arizona , Oregon,
Washington , Montana, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico and Colorado.
We certainly hope these feeds will help the many horses suffering from
carbohydrate related problems, but caution that a proper diagnosis is
key in treating disease. For an LMF Dealer call LMF Feeds at 800-344-0563

Please let me know how your horses fare on these products. We intend
to make them the best products on the market for carbohydrate intolerant
horses and ponies.
